An Identity Crisis Wrapped in Pride
What does it really mean to be Puerto Rican? Are we simply Puerto Ricans? Are we Americans? These questions have been roaming the island for decades and still are. Puerto Rico, never really having been independent, has always suffered from an identity crisis of not really knowing who we are. The island has been passed from the hands of the Spanish to the hands of the United States without having the capacity to come together and decide what we are. I, as a Puerto Rican, feel that right now Puerto Rico, being a territory of the United States, feels the need to exhibit a sense of pride to create a sense of reassurance. Here are some examples of what being Puerto Rican is all about. I included the song Preciosa from Marc Anthony because in my opinion this song is the epitome of what Puerto Rican pride is all about.
